Foam roller

Foam Roller

A foam roller is ideal for applying alkyd resin-based paints, often found in solvent-based lacquers typically used outdoors. For indoor projects, however, acrylic paint is more commonly used. For acrylic paints, the best choice is a velvet roller. These rollers have a fine-haired exterior and deliver a stunning finish. Velvet rollers are also an excellent choice for alkyd resin paints. To summarise, for acrylic lacquers, opt for a velvet roller, and for solvent-based lacquers, use either a foam roller or a velvet roller.

Tip from Verfmenger

Using a foam roller can cause an orange peel effect. Always use a foam roller with an ultra-fine texture to avoid this!

What is a Foam Roller?

Foam rollers are made from polyester foam and come in various textures. They are excellent for achieving a smooth and neat finish on smooth surfaces and are a cost-effective option. Foam rollers are perfect for large surfaces and are available in different designs, including rollers with rounded edges to minimise streaks.

Foam Roller or Fleece Roller

Foam rollers are particularly ideal for topcoating due to their smooth texture, which leaves a sleek and even finish. This makes them perfect for doors, cabinets, and other furniture requiring a polished look. On the other hand, fleece rollers are often the preferred choice for applying and handling wall paint.

Foam Roller or Velvet Roller

Foam rollers and velvet rollers are both popular choices for painting projects, but they differ significantly in both material and the final result. A foam roller, made of polyester foam, is particularly suited for applying paint on smooth surfaces. They are excellent for topcoating and deliver a neat, even appearance. However, many professionals prefer velvet rollers for topcoating. Velvet rollers, made from a fine textile material, provide an exceptional finish that is just a little more refined than what can be achieved with a foam roller.

Foam Roller at Budget Stores

The foam rollers available at budget stores like Action offer an affordable option for small painting tasks. These rollers are budget-friendly, especially for DIY enthusiasts looking for a quick and easy solution for their paint projects. While the quality may not match that of professional brands, they can suffice for simple tasks and projects. They are ideal for less intensive applications and can be a good choice when you want to freshen up a space quickly without significant expense. However, note that durability and consistency might not compare to higher-quality professional options.

Did You Know...

That using a very fine foam roller can result in a smooth and impeccable finish? Previously, foam rollers were widely used, but velvet rollers have become more popular nowadays.

Foam Roller Causes Orange Peel Effect

In the past, foam rollers were a go-to tool for professional painters. However, the so-called orange peel effect led many to switch to velvet rollers. This effect, where small imperfections appear on the paint layer resembling an orange peel’s texture, was caused by the rough texture of older foam materials. Modern foam rollers, however, are much finer in texture, nearly eliminating the orange peel effect. This has once again made foam rollers attractive for smooth finishes. However, many still prefer velvet rollers for their superior finish.
