Most metal paints can be applied directly to metal or iron while also offering rust protection, thanks to zinc phosphate in their formulation. However, no paint can be applied directly over rust (not even Hammerite).
Want to further protect your metal from rust? First, apply an iron primer or a specialised multi-primer with rust-resistant properties. That will give you a solid foundation and allow you to use any desired topcoat for the best finish.
