Advantages of alkyd lacquer
For exterior work, alkyd lacquer is the ideal product. This lacquer is more resistant to weather conditions, giving it a longer lifespan compared to water-based products. Normally, alkyd lacquer yellows when used indoors. If you want to use alkyd paint indoors, make sure it contains an “anti-yellowing property” to prevent yellowing during indoor use.
What is the coverage per m²?
The coverage of Sikkens lacquers is 12 to 16 m² per litre. However, our experience shows that most painters achieve a coverage of 10 to 12 m² per litre with Sikkens lacquer. It’s better to have a little too much paint than too little.

Which Gloss Level Do You Recommend?
For exterior lacquer, high gloss is the most suitable. High gloss lacquer has a longer lifespan. The surface is smooth, which means less dirt adheres to the lacquer. Additionally, it is easier to clean. Gloss is always indicated with a number.
A high gloss lacquer should have a gloss level of 60 to 90. Satin gloss has a gloss level of 30 to 60, and matte paint should remain below 30. These values are measured by the manufacturer. In some cases, we recommend a satin gloss lacquer. This is advised when the surface is not 100% perfect. Inexperienced DIYers also choose satin gloss lacquer because it is easier to hide small imperfections in the surface.

Which Primer Do I Need?
Undercoat and primer are essentially the same and serve the same purpose: ensuring good adhesion for the final product. Additionally, it is cost-effective for absorbent surfaces. A primer makes surfaces less absorbent, allowing more square metres to be covered per litre of paint. This will ultimately result in the best finish and save costs.

Sikkens Rubbol Finura Satin: This is a satin gloss lacquer that can be used both indoors and outdoors due to its anti-yellowing properties. This means the lacquer is specially developed to minimise yellowing indoors. Did you know that all alkyd-based paints used indoors without anti-yellowing properties will always yellow?
