Sikkens Rubbol Primer is designed for exterior use. This is a primer for a lacquer layer on wood, metal, and hard plastics. This product is a premium brand, ensuring absolute quality.
Sikkens Rubbol Primer is an alkyd (white spirit)-based primer. This ensures better adhesion between your surface and the lacquer, resulting in a better-looking final finish. We can mix this primer in any possible colour. This primer serves as a base coat for wood, hard PVC, and other plastics (excluding polyolefins such as PE and PP), concrete, plaster, etc. It is also suitable for cleaned and sanded alkyd resin paint layers.

This primer is intended for exterior application. It is a premium product of very professional quality, as Sikkens paint is a brand of the Dutch paint company AkzoNobel. Sikkens is generally considered one of the best brands/products in the field of paint and lacquer. Due to its reliability, quality, and long lifespan, many painting companies and professional painters use Sikkens.
Sikkens Rubbol Primer has excellent adhesion with Sikkens white spirit-based lacquers, such as the Sikkens Rubbol XD series. This primer also has excellent flow and is scratch and wear-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about scratches on your painted surfaces. Rubbol Primer is easy to clean with your usual household cleaning products. The ideal application temperature is 5-30 degrees Celsius, with a maximum humidity of 85%. Under ideal conditions (20 degrees), this primer is recoatable after 6 hours, allowing you to complete the job over the weekend. Another great advantage of this primer is that it is ready to use and does not need to be thinned. However, you may thin it with white spirit if you prefer.

Which brush do I need?
For applying alkyd paint and lacquer, it is important to choose the right brush. The right brush ensures the lacquer is applied evenly, with optimal absorption and release. We believe the VP Platina Mix Fibre brush contains the right fibres for the best result. This brush is made up of various fibres, combining traditional pig bristles with a selection of synthetic fibres.
Which roller do I need?
When using a roller, it is important to create a smooth and even finish. You don’t want to be fishing lint out of your paintwork. Absorption and release are essential here. For working with alkyd lacquer or paint, we recommend the Copenhagen felt roller or the Anza felt roller.
When to use?
Sikkens Rubbol Primer is used outdoors as the first layer on bare wood or over filler. Sikkens Rubbol Primer is a filling primer with easy application. It can also be used indoors, but only under Sikkens Rubbol Finura products. For exterior use, we recommend applying an additional layer of Sikkens Rubbol Primer Extra after the Sikkens Rubbol Primer.
Advantages of white spirit-based lacquer
For exterior use, we always recommend alkyd paint (white spirit-based paint), which is often paired with Sikkens Rubbol Primer. If you’re looking for durability and a long lifespan, the best choice is the following Sikkens system: Prime with Sikkens Rubbol Primer, then re-prime with Sikkens Rubbol Primer Extra, and finally topcoat with Sikkens Rubbol XD High Gloss.
What is the coverage per m²?
The coverage of Sikkens Rubbol Primer is 12 to 16 m² per litre. However, our experience shows that most painters achieve a coverage of 10 to 12 m² per litre with Sikkens primer. Which gloss level do you recommend?
Primers do not have a gloss level. However, for your lacquer, you can read our recommendations below. For exterior lacquer, high gloss is the most suitable. High gloss lacquer has a longer lifespan. The surface is smooth, which means less dirt adheres to the lacquer. Additionally, it is easier to clean. Gloss is always indicated with a number.
Sikkens Rubbol Primer is a matte primer without gloss, which is why it will not last long outdoors and should be covered with a suitable topcoat as soon as possible.
High Gloss (60-90): Ideal for outdoor work
Satin (30-60): Ideal for surfaces with imperfections
Matte Paint (less than 30): Ideal for indoor work
Which lacquer do I need?
When choosing your lacquer, there are many options. As long as you stick to the same base, you can use any solvent-based lacquer over this primer. For the best results, we recommend staying with the same brand. For example, choose Sikkens Rubbol XD High Gloss. If high gloss is too shiny for your taste, there are also satin solvent-based lacquers, such as Sikkens Rubbol Finura Satin. Unfortunately, a matte solvent-based lacquer does not exist. Are there alternatives?
Sikkens Rubbol Primer Express: This is a similar primer, also solvent-based. Its advantage is that it dries quickly and can be applied at 0 degrees Celsius.
