Sikkens Rubbol Satura
Sikkens Rubbol Satura is a satin-finish topcoat based on alkyd (white spirit). We can mix this lacquer in any possible colour. Sikkens Rubbol Satura is designed for topcoating wood, metal, and various hard plastics that have been pre-treated (primed/undercoated) according to the instructions. This lacquer is intended for exterior use. Sikkens paint is a premium product of very professional quality. This Sikkens product offers excellent coverage, outstanding flow, and protection for up to 6 years. Rubbol Satura can be easily cleaned with your usual household cleaning products. The ideal application temperature is 5-30 degrees Celsius, with a maximum humidity of 85%. Under ideal conditions (20 degrees), this lacquer is recoatable after 18 hours and dust-dry after 2.5 hours. A major advantage of this lacquer is that it is ready to use and does not need to be thinned.

When using a roller, it is important to create a smooth and even finish. You don’t want to be fishing lint out of your paintwork. Absorption and release are essential here. For working with alkyd lacquer or paint, we recommend the Copenhagen felt roller or the Anza felt roller.

Advantages of alkyd-based lacquer
For exterior work, alkyd lacquer is the ideal product. This lacquer is more resistant to weather conditions, giving it a longer lifespan compared to water-based products.
Normally, alkyd lacquer yellows when used indoors. If you want to use alkyd paint indoors, make sure it contains an “anti-yellowing property” to prevent yellowing during indoor use.
What is the coverage per m²?
The coverage of Sikkens lacquers is 12 to 16 m² per litre. However, our experience shows that most painters achieve a coverage of 10 to 12 m² per litre with Sikkens lacquer. It’s better to have a little too much paint than too little.

Which gloss level do you recommend?
For exterior lacquer, high gloss is the most suitable. High gloss lacquer has a longer lifespan. The surface is smooth, which means less dirt adheres to the lacquer. Additionally, it is easier to clean. Gloss is always indicated with a number.
A high gloss lacquer should have a gloss level of 60 to 90. Satin gloss has a gloss level of 30 to 60, and matte paint should remain below 30. These values are measured by the manufacturer. In some cases, we recommend a satin gloss lacquer. This is advised when the surface is not 100% perfect. Inexperienced DIYers also choose satin gloss lacquer because it is easier to hide small imperfections in the surface.

Which primer do I need?
Primer and undercoat are essentially the same and serve the same purpose: ensuring good adhesion for the final product. Additionally, it is cost-effective for absorbent surfaces. A primer makes surfaces less absorbent, allowing more square metres to be covered per litre of paint. This will ultimately result in the best finish and save costs.
Are there alternatives?
Sikkens Rubbol Finura Satin: This is a satin gloss lacquer that can be used both indoors and outdoors due to its anti-yellowing properties. Did you know that all alkyd-based paints used indoors without anti-yellowing properties will always yellow? So, pay close attention to this.
VP Platina PU Satin: This is an exterior lacquer from our own brand, which we have brought to the market ourselves. This is also reflected in the price. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative with the same qualities, this is the product for you.
Sikkens Rubbol XD High Gloss: This product is the same as Sikkens Rubbol XD Semi-Gloss but in high gloss. If you are looking for a high gloss lacquer of the same quality, choose this product.
