Sigma S2U Primer | Contour Primer is designed for outdoor use. This is a primer for a lacquer layer on wood, metal, and hard plastics. As a premium brand product, it guarantees absolute quality.
Sigma S2U/Contour Primer is an alkyd (white spirit-based) primer. This ensures better adhesion to your surface and lacquer, resulting in a superior final finish. We can mix this primer in any colour. It serves as a primer for wood, hard PVC, and other plastics (excluding polyolefins such as PE and PP), concrete, plaster, etc. It is also suitable for cleaned and sanded alkyd resin paint layers.
Pros and Cons
- Fast drying
- Primer for outdoor use
- High coverage
- Odorous during application
This primer is intended for outdoor use. As a premium brand product of professional quality, it is widely used by painting companies and professional painters due to its reliability, quality, and long lifespan.
Sikkens Rubbol Primer has excellent adhesion with Sikkens white spirit-based lacquers, such as the Sikkens Rubbol XD series. It also offers outstanding flow and is wear- and scratch-resistant, ensuring your painted surfaces remain free of scratches. Rubbol Primer is easy to clean with your usual cleaning products. The ideal application temperature is between 5-30 degrees Celsius, with a maximum humidity of 85%. Under ideal conditions (20 degrees), this primer can be painted over after 6 hours, making it perfect for weekend projects. Another major advantage of this primer is that it is ready to use and does not need to be diluted. However, if preferred, you can dilute it with white spirit.
Frequently Asked Questions about this product
Which brush should I use?
For applying alkyd paint and lacquer, it is important to choose the right brush. The right brush ensures the lacquer is applied evenly, with optimal absorption and release. We recommend the VP Gold Mix Fibre brush, which contains the right combination of traditional pig bristles and selected synthetic fibres for the best result.
Which paint roller should I use?
Using a roller ensures a smooth and even finish. You don’t want to be picking lint out of your paintwork. The absorption and release of the roller are crucial. We recommend the Copenhagen Lacquer Roller or the Anza Felt Roller for working with alkyd lacquer or paint.
When should I use it?
Sigma S2U Primer is suitable for protecting all outdoor woodwork, such as doors and window frames. This primer improves adhesion between your surface and lacquer, ensuring a longer-lasting and neater finish. Sigma S2U Primer is an easy-to-use product for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts.
Advantages of white spirit-based lacquer
For outdoor work, alkyd lacquer is the ideal product. This lacquer is more resistant to weather conditions, giving it a longer lifespan compared to water-based products. Normally, alkyd lacquer yellows when used indoors. If you plan to use alkyd paint indoors, ensure it contains an “anti-yellowing agent” to prevent discolouration.
What is the difference between Sigma S2U and Sigma Vorlack?
Sigma is a large and well-known brand worldwide. Sigma sells its products under different names in different countries. Sigma S2U is the Dutch line, while Sigma Contour is the name used in Germany for products with the same properties and quality.
What is the coverage per m²?
The coverage of Sigma lacquers is 12 to 16 m² per litre. However, our experience shows that most painters achieve a coverage of 10 to 12 m² per litre with Sigma lacquer. It’s better to have a little too much paint than too little.
In which colours can it be mixed?
We can mix any colour with our mixing system. To mix your desired colour, simply select it in our colour selector or contact us. For mixing Sikkens paints and lacquers, we exclusively use the official Sikkens mixing machine, including the corresponding pigments.
Most Popular Colours
We can mix any desired colour for you.
The most popular colours for this product are:
Off-White - RAL 9001
Cream White - RAL 9010
Traffic White - RAL 9016
Common colours:

Anthracite Grey - RAL 7016
Black Grey - RAL 7021
Pine Green or Monument Green - RAL 6009
Wine Red - RAL 3005
Which Gloss Level Do You Recommend?
For exterior lacquer, high gloss is the most suitable. High gloss lacquer has a longer lifespan. The surface is smooth, which means less dirt adheres to the lacquer. Additionally, it is easier to clean. Gloss is always indicated with a number.
A high gloss lacquer should have a gloss level of 60 to 90. Satin gloss has a gloss level of 30 to 60, and matte paint should remain below 30. These values are measured by the manufacturer. In some cases, we recommend satin gloss lacquer. This is advised when the surface is not 100% perfect. Less experienced DIYers also often choose satin gloss paint as it hides minor imperfections more effectively.
High gloss (60-90): Ideal for exterior work
Satin gloss (30-60): Ideal for surfaces with imperfections
Matte paint (less than 30): Ideal for interior work
Which Lacquer Do I Need?
When choosing your lacquer, there are many options. As long as you stick to the same base, you can use any solvent-based lacquer over this primer. If you want the best results, we recommend staying with the same brand. For example, choose the Sigma Contour Gloss. If you find high gloss too shiny, there are also satin gloss lacquers available on a solvent base, such as Sigma Contour Satin. Unfortunately, a matte lacquer on a solvent base does not exist. If you want a matte finish, you will need to switch to a water-based lacquer.
Are There Alternatives?
Sikkens Rubbol Primer Express: This is a similar type of primer that is also solvent-based. This primer has the advantage of being quick-drying and can be applied at 0 degrees Celsius.
VP Platina Primer: This is a solvent-based primer from our own brand, which we have brought to the market ourselves. This is also reflected in the price. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative with the same qualities, this is the product for you.
