Frequently Asked Questions about this product
Which brush should I use?
For applying alkyd paint and lacquer, it is important to choose the right brush. The right brush ensures the lacquer is applied evenly, with optimal absorption and release. We recommend the VP Gold Mix Fibre brush, which contains the right combination of traditional pig bristles and selected synthetic fibres for the best result.
Which roller should I use?
Using a roller ensures a smooth and even finish. You don’t want to be picking lint out of your paintwork. The absorption and release of the roller are crucial. We recommend the Copenhagen Lacquer Roller or the Anza Felt Roller for working with alkyd lacquer or paint.
When should I use it?
Sigma S2U Satin is most suitable for protecting doors and window frames against weather conditions. Sigma S2U Satin is an easy-to-use product for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts.
Advantages of alkyd lacquer
For outdoor work, alkyd lacquer is the ideal product. This lacquer is more resistant to weather conditions, giving it a longer lifespan compared to water-based products.
What is the difference between Sigma S2U and Sigma Contour?
Sigma is a large and well-known brand worldwide. Sigma sells its products under different names in different countries. Sigma S2U is the Dutch line, while Sigma Contour is the name used in Germany for products with the same properties and quality.
What is the coverage per m²?
The coverage of Sigma lacquers is 12 to 16 m² per litre. However, our experience shows that most painters achieve a coverage of 10 to 12 m² per litre with Sigma lacquer. It’s better to have a little too much paint than too little.
In which colours can it be mixed?
We can mix any colour with our mixing system. To mix your desired colour, simply select it in our colour selector or contact us. For mixing Sikkens paints and lacquers, we exclusively use the official Sikkens mixing machine, including the corresponding pigments.

Which Gloss Level Do You Recommend?
For exterior lacquer, high gloss is the most suitable. High gloss lacquer has a longer lifespan because the surface is smooth, meaning less dirt adheres to the lacquer. Additionally, it is easier to clean. Gloss is always indicated with a number. A high gloss lacquer should have a gloss level of 60 to 90. Satin gloss has a gloss level of 30 to 60, and matte paint should remain below 30.
These values are measured by the manufacturer. In some cases, we recommend satin gloss lacquer. This is advised when the surface is not 100% perfect. Less experienced DIYers often choose satin gloss paint because any mistakes are almost invisible with satin gloss paint.
High gloss (60-90): Ideal for exterior work
Satin gloss (30-60): Ideal for surfaces with imperfections
Matte paint (less than 30): Ideal for interior work
Which Primer Do I Need?
Primer and undercoat serve the same purpose. It’s simply an alternative term for what it does: ensuring good adhesion for the final product. Additionally, it is cost-effective for absorbent surfaces. A primer reduces the absorbency of surfaces, allowing more square metres to be covered per litre of paint. This ultimately ensures the best final result and saves costs.
Are There Alternatives?
Sigma offers various high-quality lacquers. Of course, there are also other brands and products, sometimes even at a more favourable price. For example, Nelf offers the Nelf Caraat SB, and you can choose our own brand VP Platina SB. These are good alternatives because these products have the same and/or better properties and features. For instance, the Nelf Caraat SB has a lifespan of 8 years. The VP Platina has the same properties as the AZ but offers a better price/quality ratio. Whatever choice you make, we always deliver the highest quality.
