What is Avis?
AVIS has a long and rich heritage. The company was established in 1701 and is named after the Avis family from the Zaan region. While many paint brands originated from this region, most have disappeared. The Avis family began producing linseed oil from flaxseed in 1724 at the windmill “De Koperslager.” Unfortunately, the windmill was destroyed in a fire in 1964 and was never rebuilt. By that time, Avis had already shifted production to a more modern factory in Westzaan by the late 19th century. Around the 20th century, Avis also expanded to several properties on Amsterdam’s Brouwersgracht.
