Sikkens Rubbol AZ is a high-gloss PU-based topcoat. We can mix this paint in any possible colour. Sikkens Rubbol AZ can be applied to all types of wood, steel, non-ferrous metals, and various plastics that have been pre-treated (primed/undercoated) according to the guidelines. This paint is intended for outdoor use and is a premium product of very professional quality. This product from Sikkens paint offers very high coverage with excellent flow and protection for up to 5 years.
Which roller do I need?
When using a roller, it is important to achieve a smooth and even finish. You don’t want to be picking lint out of your paintwork. Absorption and release are essential here. We recommend using the Copenhagen felt roller or the Anza felt roller for working with alkyd-based paint or lacquer.
Which brush do I need?
For applying alkyd paint and lacquer, it is important to choose the right brush. The right brush ensures the lacquer is applied evenly, with optimal absorption and release. We believe the VP Platina Mix Fibre brush contains the right fibres for the best result. This brush is made up of different fibres, combining traditional pig bristles with a selection of synthetic fibres.
When should I use this product?
Sikkens Rubbol AZ is suitable for protecting all exterior woodwork, such as doors and window frames. Sikkens Rubbol AZ is an easy-to-apply product for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts. Being PU-based (polyurethane), this product is wear and scratch-resistant.
Rubbol AZ can be easily cleaned with your usual household cleaning products. The ideal application temperature is between 5-30 degrees Celsius, with a maximum humidity of 85%. Under ideal conditions (20 degrees), this lacquer is repaintable after 18 hours and touch-dry after 2 hours. A major advantage of this lacquer is that it is ready to use and does not need to be diluted.
What is alkyd-based paint?
Sikkens Rubbol AZ is alkyd-based and therefore thinnable with white spirit. Every painter knows Sikkens Rubbol AZ as it is the oldest paint type from Sikkens with a long and rich history. Sikkens Rubbol AZ is perfect for outdoor work, is easy to apply, and lasts up to 5 years.
What is the coverage per m²?
The coverage of Sikkens Rubbol AZ is 12 to 16 m² per litre. However, our experience is slightly different, as most painters achieve a coverage of 10 to 12 m² per litre with Sikkens lacquer. It’s better to have a little too much paint than too little.
In which colours can it be mixed?
We can mix any possible colour with our mixing system. To mix your desired colour, you can simply select the colour in our colour picker or contact us. For mixing Sikkens paints and lacquers, we exclusively use the official Sikkens mixing machine, including the corresponding mixing pigments.

Which finish do you recommend?
For exterior paint, high gloss is the most suitable option. High gloss paint has a longer lifespan. Its smooth surface prevents dirt from adhering easily to the paint, making it easier to clean. Gloss levels are always indicated by a number.
Sikkens Rubbol AZ is an excellent choice for outdoor projects.
High gloss paint should have a gloss level of 60 to 90. A silk gloss finish has a gloss level of 30 to 60, and matte paint should remain below 30. These values are measured by the manufacturer. In certain cases, we recommend silk gloss paint, especially if the surface is not entirely perfect. Unskilled DIYers often prefer silk gloss, as it hides small imperfections in the surface more effectively.
High gloss (60-90): Ideal for exterior work.
Silk gloss (30-60): Ideal for surfaces with imperfections.
Matte finish (below 30): Ideal for interior use.
Which primer do I need?
We recommend applying 2 coats of primer on bare and untreated wood. Start with one coat of Sikkens Rubbol Primer, followed by Sikkens Rubbol Primer Extra, and finish with one coat of Sikkens Rubbol AZ.
For existing paint or older paint layers, first apply Sikkens Rubbol Primer Extra and then finish with Sikkens Rubbol AZ.
Sikkens Rubbol AZ has a lifespan of only 5 years. Are you looking for a more durable finish? Choose Sikkens Rubbol XD High Gloss. The application system remains the same as with Sikkens AZ, but its lifespan is 10 years instead of 5.
Are there alternatives?
Sikkens Rubbol Finura High Gloss: This is a high gloss paint that can be applied both outdoors and indoors due to its anti-yellowing properties.
VP Platina PU Satin: This is an exterior paint from our own brand, which we developed ourselves. This is reflected in the pricing. Are you looking for a more affordable alternative with the same quality? Then this is the product you need.
Sikkens Rubbol XD Semi-Gloss: This product is the same as the Sikkens Rubbol XD High Gloss, but with a semi-gloss finish—somewhere between silk gloss and high gloss. If you're looking for a semi-gloss paint of the same quality, choose this product.
Step-by-step guide
Step 1: Before you start painting, we recommend degreasing the surface.
Step 2: Once degreased, you can start sanding and filling (if necessary).
Step 3: Apply two layers of primer—Sikkens Rubbol Primer and Sikkens Rubbol Primer Extra—to bare wood. For existing paintwork, only use Sikkens Rubbol Primer.
Step 4: Apply one single coat of Sikkens high gloss paint for finishing. To answer the question "How many coats of Sikkens Rubbol AZ should I apply?", the answer is simple—just one layer is sufficient.
More about this product

However, its lifespan is shorter and depends on various factors like exposure to sunlight, wind, and the surface condition. What is Sikkens Rubbol AZ?
Sikkens Rubbol AZ is a high gloss finish that’s easy to apply and universally suitable. It is a turpentine-thinnable product intended for outdoor use only. Sikkens Rubbol AZ is the oldest topcoat from Sikkens and has since been surpassed by Sikkens Rubbol XD High Gloss and Sikkens Rubbol SB.
Can Sikkens Rubbol AZ be used indoors?
Unfortunately, Sikkens Rubbol AZ is not suitable for indoor use. This is because the alkyd content in the product causes yellowing over time indoors. Additionally, turpentine-based paint has a strong odour and poses health risks. To answer the question, "Can Sikkens Rubbol AZ be used indoors?" The answer is no—don't do it!
