To protect wood outdoors, we recommend a solvent-based primer, followed by a solvent-based topcoat for durability and longevity. For interior projects, choose a water-based primer, as it is odourless and dries quickly. You can then complete the job with a scratch- and wear-resistant water-based topcoat.
What Types of Wood Primer Are There?
There are two main types of wood primer: water-based and solvent-based. For indoor use, we recommend a water-based primer, and for outdoor projects, go for solvent-based primer. It is perfectly fine to apply solvent-based paint over water-based primer, but the reverse is not advisable. This is because solvent repels water, which may cause adhesion issues.
