The best stair paint offers here
At the Verfmenger, we guarantee the lowest price and great offers on our stair paints. All our stair paint brands are included.
Stair paint with solvent base
Nowadays, stair paint is almost always water-based. However, there are products that are solvent-based and well-suited for stairs. One example is Sikkens Rubbol Finura Satin. A drawback of this product is that it can yellow over time and takes much longer to dry compared to water-based paint. You’ll also notice the strong smell of the solvent, so it’s advisable to ventilate properly.
Water-based stair paint
With the advanced formulations of modern water-based paints and varnishes, water-based stair lacquer has become indispensable. It dries quickly, ensuring you can still sleep in your own bed, has no strong odour, and is of excellent quality. A water-based stair paint is highly resistant to wear and scratches and can be mixed in any colour you desire.

Sigma stair paint
Like Sikkens, Sigma offers excellent stair paints. Sigma stair paints are water-based and highly resistant to wear and scratches. Looking for high-quality stair paint? Choose Sigma S2U Nova stair paints. Most of the time, these come with an anti-slip feature or we can add it using a special paste. Sigma stair paint stands for quality and can be mixed in both dark and light shades, such as Sigma stair paint black for a modern look.
Wear and scratch-resistant stair paint
It’s essential to invest in stair paint with high wear and scratch resistance. Without this, the paint will wear off quickly, leaving unsightly tread marks on the stairs. Thankfully, most water-based paints are highly durable.
Stair paint at DIY stores
Stair paints sold at DIY stores are often of lesser quality. These stores generally offer DIY products that do not compare to Sigma stair lacquer or other top brands. DIY stair paints are less resistant to wear and scratches and therefore tend to wear out faster.
Solvent-based paint: Solvent-based paints have a strong smell during application, take longer to dry, and might yellow over time. This makes them less suitable for indoor use. However, with the right product, it is possible.
Water-based paint: Water-based paints dry faster, have less odour, and do not yellow over time unless you opt for the Sikkens Rubbol Finura Satin. This product includes anti-yellowing properties, making it suitable for internal use. A key advantage of solvent-based products is their excellent levelling properties compared to water-based options.
Two-component paint: A two-component paint hardens exceptionally well, making it incredibly durable. It is often the best choice.

Step-by-step Guide
Step 1 Preparation: As with painting interior wood, ensure the stairs are clean and free of dust and grease. Use a mild cleaning solution and a soft cloth to thoroughly clean the surface. Allow the stairs to dry completely before continuing.
Step 2 Sanding: If an old layer of paint is present, gently sand it down to improve adhesion for the new paint. Use fine sandpaper and always sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid scratches. Wipe away dust with a dry cloth after sanding.
Step 3 Masking: To prevent paint from spilling on floors or walls, mask the stairs properly. Use painter’s tape along the edges for clean lines.
Step 4 Painting: Now you’re ready to paint. Use a quality brush or roller and apply the paint evenly. Thin coats are better than one thick coat, so be patient and allow each layer to dry fully before applying the next.
Step 5 Finishing: After applying the final coat and letting it dry completely, carefully remove the painter’s tape. Touch up any minor mistakes with a small brush if needed.
Painting stairs can be a challenging task, but with the right preparation and attention to detail, the result will be worth it. You’ll be amazed at the difference a fresh coat of paint can make!
