VP Platinum PU Gloss
VP Platinum PU Gloss is a stunning high-gloss varnish suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. VP Platinum PU offers outstanding adhesion to a variety of surfaces. Furthermore, our VP brand is renowned for its scratch resistance, long lifespan, and quick drying time. Thanks to the use of top-quality raw materials, this varnish features an exceptionally low yellowing rate.
This varnish is an extremely weather-resistant exterior lacquer that ensures a reliable, high-gloss finish on wood, metal, and hard plastics. This product is part of our own brand and is comparable to Sikkens Rubbol products.
Pros and Cons
- Maintenance-free for up to 7 years
- Easy to apply
- Can be mixed in any colour
- Colours may yellow indoors due to white spirit
This is a high-gloss varnish based on alkyd (white spirit). We can mix this varnish in any colour you desire. It is designed for painting wood, metal, and various hard plastics that have been pre-treated as per the instructions.
VP Platinum has a high covering power with excellent flow and provides protection for up to 7 years. VP Platinum is easy to clean with your usual cleaning products. The ideal application temperature is between 5–30 degrees Celsius with a maximum humidity of 85%. Under ideal conditions (20 degrees Celsius), this varnish is recoatable after 18 hours, so you can complete the task over the weekend. Another great advantage of this varnish is that it is ready to use and does not require thinning. However, if necessary, you may thin the product using white spirit.
What brush should I use?
When applying alkyd paint and varnish, it is important to select the right brush. The correct brush ensures a smooth application, with optimal absorption and release. We believe the VP Platinum Mixed Fibre brush is ideal for achieving the best result. This brush consists of a blend of traditional boar hairs and selected synthetic fibres.
What paint roller should I use?
When using a roller, it is important to create a smooth and even finish. You don’t want to struggle with picking fluff out of your paintwork. Absorption and release are essential for this. We recommend using either the Copenhagen felt roller or the Anza felt roller when working with alkyd paints or varnishes.
What is VP Platinum PU Gloss used for?
VP Platinum is suitable for protecting all outdoor woodwork, such as doors and window frames. This varnish is easy to apply and is perfect for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts.
Advantages of alkyd varnish
For outdoor projects, alkyd varnish is the ideal product. This varnish is more resistant to weather conditions, resulting in a longer lifespan compared to water-based products. Normally, an alkyd varnish can yellow when used indoors. If you plan to use alkyd paint indoors, ensure it contains a “non-yellowing agent” to prevent yellowing.
What is the coverage area per m²?
The coverage of VP varnishes is 12 to 14 m² per litre. However, in our experience, most painters achieve 10 to 12 m² per litre with VP varnish. It’s always better to have a bit more paint than to run out mid-project.
What colours can you mix?

Which gloss do you recommend?
For exterior varnish, high gloss is the most suitable option. High-gloss varnish has a longer lifespan. Its smooth surface reduces dirt build-up on the finish and makes it easier to clean. Gloss is always indicated with a number.
High-gloss varnishes should have a gloss level of 60 to 90. Semi-gloss varnishes have a gloss level ranging from 30 to 60, while matte paints must stay below 30. These values are measured by the manufacturer. Sometimes, we recommend a semi-gloss varnish, particularly when the surface isn’t completely smooth. Additionally, inexperienced DIYers often choose semi-gloss finishes as they better conceal small imperfections in the surface.
High gloss (60-90): Ideal for outdoor work
Semi-gloss (30-60): Best for uneven surfaces
Matte paint (below 30): Best for interior work
Which primer should I use?
Base coat and primer serve the same purpose. The two terms simply refer to the same thing, namely ensuring that the final product adheres well. Additionally, it reduces costs when working with absorbent surfaces. A primer makes surfaces less absorbent, allowing more square metres to be covered per litre of paint. This ultimately results in the best final outcome, whilst also saving you money. The recommended primer for this product is VP Platinum primer.
Are there alternatives?
Sikkens Rubbol Finura High Gloss: This is a high-gloss varnish suitable for both exterior and interior use due to its anti-yellowing properties. Did you know that all alkyd paints without an "anti-yellowing agent" will yellow when used indoors? Make sure to check for this feature.
VP Platinum PU Satin: This is an outdoor varnish from our own brand, introduced to the market by us. This is reflected in its price point. The main difference is its gloss level. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative with similar qualities, then this is the product for you.
