Koopmans Ecoleum Black
Koopmans Ecoleum Black is an environmentally friendly, highly impregnating outdoor stain of professional quality. The great thing about this product is that only one coat is required. Additionally, it has a modern, matte finish that showcases the natural wood grain beautifully. Sanding is not necessary, and it can be directly applied to bare wood. However, this product is only suitable for untreated softwoods.
Pros and Cons
- One coat is enough
- Alternative to creosote
- No sanding required
- Not suitable for hardwoods
What is Koopmans Ecoleum Black used for?
Koopmans Ecoleum Black has a wide range of uses. It is ideal for fences and garden sheds, but we also receive frequent requests for treating barns and farmhouses. Customers like the product for its ease of use—it doesn’t require sanding or priming, and a single coat is sufficient for complete coverage. Some colours are also available in plain tins, containing the same original Ecoleum, but the labels were damaged and have been replaced with new tins (without labels).
What are the advantages and disadvantages of linseed oil in Koopmans Ecoleum Black?
Linseed oil has been used for decades as a paint base. Today, it’s popular because it is more environmentally friendly than traditional alkyd resins. There is a misconception that linseed oil-based paints or stains aren’t paintable, but this isn’t true. Linseed oil cures slowly, allowing it to expand and contract more flexibly—perfect for old barns. However, there are drawbacks. Linseed-based products, including Koopmans Ecoleum, tend to dry more slowly and may remain tacky during warm weather. It is also less processable in cold temperatures and should not be applied when the surrounding temperature is below 6°C.
What is the coverage per m² of this product?
Coverage for Koopmans Ecoleum Black differs from other paints or stains. Since only one coat is required, the product penetrates deeply into the wood, resulting in higher usage—between 3 and 6 m² per litre. However, applying one coat significantly reduces working time and stain costs.
What colours is Koopmans Ecoleum Black available in?
Koopmans Ecoleum is available in nine standard colours. Unfortunately, we cannot custom-mix Koopmans Ecoleum, so we rely on these nine popular choices.
Koopmans Ecoleum Black 239
Black 239 is by far our best-selling product. During summer, the 2.5-litre tins fly off the shelves, often faster than we can restock. Fortunately, we always ensure Black 239 is available. Besides 2.5-litres, we also carry 5-litre and 10-litre tins, specially filled to meet high demand. Additionally, the 20-litre barrels of Black 239 are always in stock.
Koopmans Ecoleum Pine 217
Pine offers a beautiful, natural finish to untreated wood and is often paired with Ecoleum Black.
Koopmans Ecoleum Teak 213
Teak provides a warmer tone than pine and is perfect for protecting garden posts or fences against weather elements.
Koopmans Ecoleum Dark Grey 229
Dark Grey blends well with other greys or black shades, ideal for modern designs.
Koopmans Ecoleum Light Grey 228
Light Grey, sometimes referred to as “grey wash”, is an excellent treatment for scaffolding wood, pairing beautifully with darker tones.
Koopmans Ecoleum Black Brown 225
A popular choice for farmers looking to protect their barns.
Koopmans Ecoleum Dark Brown 210
This shade is another favourite among farmers and also suits garden sheds and fences.
Koopmans Ecoleum Dark Green 206
A timeless, classic choice for garden sheds and fences.
Koopmans Ecoleum Eco-Green 218
An unconventional but still effective option for those with specific colour preferences.
What finish does Koopmans Ecoleum Black have?
Koopmans Ecoleum Black has a matte, semi-transparent finish that accentuates the wood grain without gloss—perfect for a modern look.
Can Koopmans Ecoleum Black be applied directly to bare wood?
Yes, Koopmans Ecoleum can be applied directly to bare wood without pre-treatment or sanding. However, wood should be cleaned if dirty.
Is Koopmans Ecoleum paintable?
Yes, but we recommend cleaning and lightly sanding the surface first for the best results.
Pre-treatment
Before starting, we advise cleaning the surface using a degreaser like St Marc Cleaner.
Is Koopmans Ecoleum available in 20-litre barrels?
The 20-litre barrels of Koopmans Ecoleum Black are a top seller, and we always keep them in stock.
What roller or brush do I need?
Koopmans Ecoleum can be applied with a stain brush or roller. However, for fences and garden sheds with grooves, a stain brush is always required.
Are there alternatives to this product?
Koopmans Perkoleum: This stain paint is suitable for planed wood and requires two coats.
Koopmans Woodcoat Black: Similar to Ecoleum but even less glossy, available only in black.
