Pros and Cons
- High gloss
- Moisture-regulating
- Available in any colour
- Not suitable for interior use
What is Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss Transparent used for?
Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss Transparent is ideal for protecting garden sheds and canopy roofs. This product is durable, moisture-regulating, and water-repellent. Its transparent nature allows the wood grain to remain visible while adding vibrant colour to the surface.
Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss Transparent is linseed oil-based. What are its advantages and disadvantages?
Linseed oil has been used as a paint ingredient for decades and is now especially popular due to its environmental benefits compared to alkyd resins. A common misunderstanding about linseed oil-based paints and stains is that they cannot be repainted—this is completely untrue. Since linseed oil cures more slowly, it allows great flexibility for contracting and expanding, which is a major benefit for older wooden structures.
However, there are some drawbacks to linseed oil-based products; they often dry more slowly, as is the case with Koopmans Perkoleum Transparent. Under warm conditions, the product may stay sticky for longer, and it is less suitable for application in cold weather due to curing concerns. The product should never be applied when the ambient temperature is below 6 degrees Celsius.
What is the coverage per m² of this product?
The coverage of Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss depends on the surface. Since it’s a single-coat system, no primer is needed, which results in higher use for the initial layer compared to subsequent layers. The average coverage is between 10–12 m² per litre, though the manufacturer indicates 14 m² per litre.
For untreated wood with a clear finish, we recommend 3–4 coats, with the first coat diluted by 5–10% with turpentine. If you choose a transparent tinted colour, 2–3 coats are sufficient, also with the first coat diluted for the base layer.
What colours are available for Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss Transparent?
Koopmans Perkoleum can be mixed in any colour using our mixing system. While certain colours are factory-standard, we also mix many shades ourselves, which can sometimes lead to slight colour differences.
Popular mixed colours include:
- HG Pine 217: A transparent tone produced using our mixing system.
- HG Teak 213
- HG Dark Oak 214
- HG Light Oak 232
- HG Sapporo Mahogany 222
- HG Walnut 220
We also mix custom transparent finishes like White Wash, Grey Wash, and Black Wash using the Koopmans mixing system. These can provide unique results for design and protection needs.
What gloss levels are available for Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss Transparent?
Koopmans Perkoleum is available in both high gloss (60–90 sheen) and satin gloss (30–60 sheen). High gloss creates an easy-to-clean, dirt-resistant finish, while satin gloss helps hide surface imperfections. Transparent options are available in both gloss levels.
Can Koopmans Perkoleum Transparent be applied directly to bare wood?
Yes! Koopmans Perkoleum Transparent can be applied directly onto untreated wood. For untreated or raw wood, we suggest applying 3–4 coats, with the first layer diluted by 5–10% for better penetration. For coloured transparent finishes, 2–3 coats are sufficient, again with a base diluted coat.
Is Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss Transparent paintable?
Yes, it is completely paintable. You can use either a matching transparent shade or opt for a fully opaque colour depending on your design preference.
Is Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss opaque or transparent?
Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss is offered in both opaque and transparent finishes. The product range includes:
- High Gloss Opaque
- High Gloss Transparent
- High Gloss Clear UV
- Satin Gloss Opaque
- Satin Gloss Transparent
- Satin Gloss Clear UV
No matter your project needs, Koopmans Perkoleum has an option available.
Which paint roller or brush should I use?
Koopmans Perkoleum High Gloss can be applied with a professional brush or roller. Larger surfaces are more convenient with a roller, though for garden sheds and fences with grooves in the wood, you’ll still need a brush. If you’re working on window frames or doors with Koopmans Perkoleum, you can also use a specialised lacquer roller.
Are there alternatives to this product?
Jotun Demidekk: While different from Perkoleum, Jotun Demidekk shares a similar colour range with Koopmans Perkoleum Transparent. Jotun is water-based and boasts a 10-year lifespan, though it is notably more expensive. Customers will need to weigh durability against cost.
Topdeq Aqua Stain WA: This water-based stain comes close in price to Koopmans Perkoleum Transparent. However, being water-based, it functions as a completely different product.
More about this product
Koopmans Paint has a rich history dating back to its foundation in 1885 by Klaas Piet Koopmans, whose initials make up the company name, K.P. Koopmans. By 1890, production had increased significantly, with natural ingredients and pigments still being crafted at home in Ferwert. P.K. Koopmans eventually outgrew their home-based operations, relocating to a small-scale factory in the heart of Ferwert. This factory remained operational for approximately 100 years.
Around 1930, amidst economic challenges, Koopmans launched the Extralux series, a line consisting of the most common primers and high-gloss/ satin-finish paints. By the 1970s, increasing demand for paint led Koopmans to introduce Koopmans Perkoleum, a product still widely available and highly popular today.
Following the oil crisis of the 1980s, rising disposable incomes drove demand for home improvements, including paint. P.K. Koopmans responded by building a new factory on the outskirts of Ferwert. By 1992, Perkoleum had a complementary counterpart known as Koopmans Ecoleum, an environmentally friendly alternative to tar-based coatings. Both products remain key offerings.
Koopmans achieved nationwide recognition in 1995 with a radio advertisement. Buoyed by this visibility, the company relocated to a larger, state-of-the-art factory in Marrum by 1997. This modern facility continues to supply the Netherlands and parts of Europe with Koopmans products.
Today, the factory also produces paint for other brands, including Drenth Paint, Pastolex Wall Paint, Nelf Paint, Nelf Wall Paint, and Nylo Coatings.
