Frequently Asked Questions About This Product
Which brush should I use?
Choosing the right brush is essential for applying alkyd paint and lacquer. With the appropriate brush, you'll achieve even application and optimal paint uptake and release. We recommend the VP Gold Mix Brush, which combines traditional hog hairs with a selection of synthetic fibres to deliver the best results.
What paint roller should I use?
A good roller ensures a smooth and even finish on your surface. Paint uptake and release are crucial when choosing the right roller. The last thing you want is to remove lint from your paintwork. We advise using the Copenhagen Finish Roller or the Anza Felt Roller for working with alkyd paint or lacquer.
When should I use this?
Drenth PU Primer is suitable for protecting all outdoor woodwork, including doors and frames. This primer improves adhesion between the surface and your lacquer, ensuring a longer-lasting finish and a neater result. Designed for both professionals and DIYers, "SD" stands for "fast-drying," enabling you to prime and paint in the same day.
What are the benefits of solvent-based lacquer?
Solvent-based lacquers like alkyd lacquer are ideal for outdoor use as they are more resistant to weather conditions, lasting longer than water-based alternatives. While solvent-based lacquers may yellow indoors, opting for one with an “anti-yellowing formula” can prevent this and make it suitable for use inside.
What is the coverage per square metre?
The coverage of Drenth lacquers is approximately 12 to 16 m2 per litre. However, in practice, painters often achieve around 10 to 12 m2 per litre. It’s always better to have a bit more paint than not enough.
What colours can you mix it in?
We can mix any colour using our mixing system. Simply select your desired shade using our colour selector or contact us for assistance. When mixing Sikkens paints and lacquers, we exclusively use official Sikkens mixing machines and pigments for perfect accuracy.
What kind of lacquer should I use?
When choosing your lacquer, it’s essential to stay within the same base (solvent). You can use any solvent-based lacquer over this primer. For the best results, we recommend staying within the same brand; for example, the Sikkens Rubbol XD High Gloss. If high gloss is too shiny for you, there are also satin-finish lacquers, such as Sikkens Rubbol Finura Satin. Unfortunately, matte solvent-based lacquers are unavailable. If you prefer a matte finish, you’ll need to use a water-based lacquer instead.
Are there alternatives?
Sikkens Rubbol Primer: A similar solvent-based primer known for its premium quality.
VP Platina Quick Primer: Our in-house brand version of a solvent-based primer, offering comparable quality at a more affordable price.
