Sikkens Alpha Ceiling Extreme Matt
Sikkens Alpha Ceiling Extreme Matt is an interior paint specifically developed for ceilings. This paint stands out due to its slow drying time. Because the paint dries slowly, you won’t experience streaks on your ceiling. As a result, the entire ceiling dries evenly, giving you a seamless and smooth finish. Pros and Cons
- Airless sprayable
- Easy to apply
- No streaks or lines
- Scrub class 2
- Not suitable for outdoor use
Sikkens Alpha Ceiling Extreme Matt is a matt water-based paint from the brand Sikkens. We can mix this paint in any light colour. Sikkens Alpha Ceiling Extreme Matt is specifically designed for ceilings (made of concrete) with a spray plaster (Spack). However, this versatile paint is also suitable for other ceiling surfaces and well-adhering, cleaned old ceiling paint layers. This is a premium product of professional quality, as Sikkens is a brand of the Dutch paint company AkzoNobel. Sikkens is generally considered one of the best brands/products in the field of paint and varnish. Due to its reliability, quality, and long lifespan, many painting companies and professional painters use Sikkens.
Sikkens Alpha Ceiling Extreme Matt has another major advantage: it is ready to use and does not need to be diluted. Of course, you can dilute the first layer if needed. If so, use water or, preferably, an acrylic thinner. Sikkens Alpha Ceiling Extreme Matt can be applied airless, with a paint roller, or with a brush. Sikkens ceiling paint is not just any wall paint for ceilings; this extremely matt and white ceiling paint dries completely evenly and streak-free.
Frequently Asked Questions About Sikkens Ceiling Paint
Which brush do I need?
For applying ceiling paint, it is important to choose the right brush. The right brush ensures the latex is applied evenly, with optimal absorption and release. We believe the VP synthetic all-round brush contains the right fibres for the best result. This brush is made up of different fibres, combining traditional pig bristles with a selection of synthetic fibres.
Which roller do I need?
When using a wall paint roller, it is desirable to create a smooth and even finish. You don’t want to be picking lint out of your paintwork. Absorption and release are essential here. We recommend using the Toptex wall paint roller for working with wall paint/latex. This roller performs best in our tests. Read more about which wall paint roller to use for your project.
When to use?
Sikkens Alpha Ceiling Extreme Matt is suitable for protecting your ceiling. It is an easy-to-apply product for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts. If you have a newly plastered ceiling, we always recommend using a primer. This prevents the ceiling from absorbing too much paint and fills all small pores, ensuring your expensive paint doesn’t get absorbed into the walls. Sikkens Alpha Ceiling Extreme Matt has an extra matt finish combined with scrub class 2, meaning that, for example, a smudge can be easily cleaned off the ceiling. This makes it easy to keep the paint clean.
What is the coverage per m²?
The coverage of Sikkens paints is 9 to 11 m² per litre. However, our experience is slightly different, as most painters achieve a coverage of 7 to 8 m² per litre with Sikkens paints. It’s better to have a little too much paint than too little.
Pre-treatment
Before starting your project, we recommend always cleaning the surface. For example, use St Marc degreaser. Regardless of the surface you are treating—concrete, wood, stone, or wallpaper—always clean it first to ensure the best adhesion.
In which colours can it be mixed?

Sikkens Ceiling Paint for ceilings
For ceilings, we always recommend wall paint specially developed for ceilings. This is because very specific properties are required. A "normal" wall paint may not always have these properties.
What properties are so important for a ceiling? For ceilings, coverage is essential, and it must always be of the highest class (class 1). If it is a lower class, the chances of streaks and patches are much greater. Additionally, drying time is important, as a wall paint that dries too quickly (contains a lot of chalk) can lead to streaks and patches, which are visible when looking directly at the light. This is referred to as raking light. A wall paint that dries slowly and evenly solves this problem. The scrubbability class, however, is much less important, as the likelihood of stubborn stains on a ceiling is minimal. The only stain you might need to clean off a ceiling is from a squashed bug, which can be done easily with a scrub class of 2 or 3.
What is raking light?
Raking light is visible when you look at the ceiling in the light. It can be problematic if you use a wall paint with a high chalk content. These products usually cover well but dry too quickly, causing some layers to overlap when rolled, which creates a visible thickening when viewed directly in the light. TIP: Always choose a wall paint with a slow drying time for ceilings to avoid this problem. Otherwise, you’ll keep having to redo it.
Do I need a primer?
Before treating your ceiling or walls with wall paint/latex, it’s important to find out whether you need a primer. The good news is that you can figure this out yourself by performing a simple test. Take a wet sponge and press it against the wall. If the wall absorbs the water, a primer is needed. If the wall doesn’t absorb moisture, no pre-treatment is required. For more tips and detailed instructions, check out our blog about applying primer.
