Frequently Asked Questions about this product
Which brush do I need?
For applying alkyd paint and lacquer, it is important to choose the right brush. The right brush ensures the lacquer is applied evenly, with optimal absorption and release. We believe the VP Platina Mix Fibre brush contains the right fibres for the best result. This brush is made up of various fibres, combining traditional pig bristles with a selection of synthetic fibres.
Which paint roller do I need?
When using a roller, it is important to create a smooth and even finish. You don’t want to be fishing lint out of your paintwork. Absorption and release are essential here. For working with alkyd lacquer or paint, we recommend the Copenhagen felt roller or the Anza felt roller.
When to use?
Sikkens Rubbol Express is suitable for protecting all exterior woodwork, such as doors and window frames. Sikkens Rubbol is an easy-to-apply product for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts.
Advantages of alkyd lacquer
For exterior work, alkyd lacquer is the ideal product. This lacquer is more resistant to weather conditions, giving it a longer lifespan compared to water-based products.
What is the coverage per m²?
The coverage of Sikkens lacquers is 12 to 16 m² per litre. However, our experience shows that most painters achieve a coverage of 10 to 12 m² per litre with Sikkens lacquer. It’s better to have a little too much paint than too little.
In which colours can it be mixed?
We can mix any colour with our mixing system. To mix your desired colour, simply choose the colour in our colour selector or contact us. For mixing Sikkens paints and lacquers, we exclusively use the official Sikkens mixing machine, including the corresponding mixing pigments.

Which gloss level do you recommend?
For exterior lacquer, high gloss is the most suitable. High gloss lacquer has a longer lifespan. The surface is smooth, which means less dirt adheres to the lacquer. Additionally, it is easier to clean. Gloss is always indicated with a number.
A high gloss lacquer should have a gloss level of 60 to 90. A satin finish has a gloss level of 30 to 60, and matte paint should remain below 30. These values are measured by the manufacturer. In some cases, we recommend a satin lacquer. This is advised when the surface is not 100% smooth. Inexperienced DIYers also often choose satin lacquer, as it is easier to hide small imperfections in the surface.
High Gloss (60-90): Ideal for outdoor work
Satin (30-60): Ideal for surfaces with imperfections
Matte Paint (less than 30): Ideal for indoor work
Which primer do I need?
Undercoat and primer are essentially the same and serve the same purpose: ensuring good adhesion for the final product. Additionally, it is cost-effective for absorbent surfaces. A primer reduces absorbency, allowing more square metres to be covered per litre of paint. This ultimately ensures the best result and saves costs.
Are there alternatives?
Sikkens Rubbol Finura High Gloss: This is a high gloss lacquer that can be applied both indoors and outdoors due to its resistance to yellowing in darker conditions.
VP Platina PU Satin: This is an exterior lacquer from our own brand, which we have brought to the market ourselves. This is also reflected in the price. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative with the same qualities, this is the product for you.
Sikkens Rubbol XD Semi-Gloss: This product is the same as Sikkens Rubbol XD High Gloss but in a semi-gloss finish, which is between satin and high gloss. If you are looking for a semi-gloss lacquer of the same quality, choose this product.
