Drenth AQX Matte
The Drenth AQX Matte is a water-based lacquer suitable for indoor use. This product can be mixed in any colour you desire. Drenth AQX Matte will not yellow indoors as it is water-based. This lacquer is intended for finishing surfaces such as wood, hard plastics, concrete, and plasterwork. Drenth AQX Matte has excellent coverage with superb flow and is wear-resistant and scratch-proof, so there’s no need to worry about scratches on your painted surfaces. The Drenth AQX Matte is also easy to clean using your regular household cleaning products.
The ideal application temperature is between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius, with a maximum humidity level of 85%. Under optimal conditions (20 degrees Celsius), this lacquer can be repainted after 6 hours, making it perfect for completing your project over the weekend. Another great advantage is that this lacquer is ready-to-use and does not require thinning.
You can, however, thin the lacquer if you find it easier to work with. Use water or an acrylic thinner for this purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Product
Which brush should I use for acrylic lacquer?
An excellent brush for this paint is the VP All Round Synthetic Brush. This brush contains carefully selected synthetic fibres that ensure optimal absorption and release of the paint.
What paint roller should I use?
We recommend the VP Superflock Acrylic Roller for use with acrylic lacquers or paints. With optimal absorption and release, this roller guarantees a smooth and even finish. After all, you don’t want to deal with lint in your paintwork.
When should I use it?
Drenth AQX Matte is ideal for protecting all interior woodwork, such as doors, stairs, and frames. This product is easy to work with, making it suitable for both professionals and DIYers. With its resistance to skin oils, Drenth AQX Matte can be used almost anywhere indoors!
What are the benefits of a water-based lacquer?
Acrylic lacquer is the ideal product for indoor tasks. It doesn’t emit strong odours during application, and as it doesn’t contain solvent, your colours won’t yellow over time. Drenth AQX Matte is an excellent example, offering exceptional wear and scratch resistance as well as being resistant to skin oils.
What is the surface coverage per litre?
The coverage of Drenth AQX Matte is 12 to 16 m2 per litre. However, our experience shows painters typically achieve a coverage of 10 to 12m2 per litre. It’s always better to have slightly more paint than to run out. We always keep Drenth AQX Matte in stock, and you can quickly pick up another can of 1 or 2.5 litres from our store. Ordering online? The most popular colours for this product include:
RAL 9001 (off white)
RAL 9010 (cream white)
RAL 9016 (traffic white)
Common choices include:
RAL 9005 (jet black)
RAL 7016 (anthracite grey)
RAL 7021 (black grey)
RAL 6009 (pine green or heritage green)
RAL 3005 (wine red)
What level of gloss should I choose?
Drenth AQX Matte is an extremely matte paint, perfect for interior use. Matte finishes are becoming increasingly popular, providing a modern look.
A high-gloss lacquer should have a gloss level of 60 to 90. Satin has a gloss level between 30 and 60, and matte finishes fall below 30. These values are factory-measured. We sometimes recommend a satin finish—for example, when the surface isn’t perfectly smooth. DIYers also often opt for satin, as it hides minor imperfections more effectively.
High gloss (60-90): great for exterior work
Satin (30-60): ideal for minor surface imperfections
Matte (below 30): perfect for interior tasks
What primer should I use?
Unfortunately, Drenth AQX Matte cannot be applied directly to bare wood or old paint layers. We recommend the following AQX systems:
Bare wood: Treat bare wood with Drenth AQX Primer before finishing with Antonol AQX Matte.
Old alkyd paint: For old solvent-based lacquer layers, start with Drenth AQX Primer to ensure optimal adhesion.
Old acrylic paint: Water-based paint can be painted over directly with AQX Matte. Usually, one coat is sufficient.
Are there alternatives?
Sikkens Rubbol BL Rezisto Matte: A similar water-based matte lacquer, also suitable for indoor use. As a premium brand, it ensures top quality.
VP Platina Aqua Matte: This is our in-house brand of interior lacquer. Its affordable price makes it an attractive option without compromising quality. This product also boasts a matte finish.
VP Platina Aqua Gloss: Similar to Aqua Matte, this water-based interior lacquer offers excellent value. However, it has a satin finish rather than matte. If you're looking for something between matte and high gloss, this is the product for you.
Application Steps
Step 1: Start by thoroughly degreasing the surface.
Step 2: Sand and fill imperfections for a smooth finish.
